The Orphan of China is a tragedy written by the French philosopher and writer Voltaire in 1756. The play is set in ancient China and tells the story of a young orphan named Zamti who is adopted by the Emperor. Zamti is raised as the Emperor’s son and is destined to inherit the throne, but his life takes a tragic turn when his true identity is revealed. The play explores themes of identity, power, and betrayal as Zamti struggles to come to terms with his true origins and the power dynamics at play in the imperial court. Voltaire draws on his knowledge of Chinese culture and history to create a vivid and compelling portrait of life in ancient China, while also using the play as a vehicle for his own philosophical and political ideas. The Orphan of China was one of Voltaire’s most popular plays during his lifetime and remains a classic of French literature. It has been adapted for the stage and screen numerous times, and continues to be studied and performed by scholars and theater enthusiasts around the world. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
