The Natural Son: A Tragedy is a play written by James Mason in 1805. The play tells the story of a young man named Edward, who is the illegitimate son of a wealthy man named Lord Norland. Edward is raised in poverty by his mother, but when Lord Norland dies, he inherits a large fortune and is able to live a life of luxury. However, he struggles to find his place in society and is haunted by his illegitimate status. As he tries to navigate his new life, he falls in love with a woman named Louisa, but their relationship is threatened by the disapproval of Louisa’s father and Edward’s own inner demons. The play explores themes of class, identity, and the consequences of societal expectations. It is considered a classic example of 19th-century melodrama and has been adapted for the stage and screen numerous times. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
