The Martyr of Allahabad is a historical book written by Robert Meek in 1857. The book is a memorial to Ensign Arthur Marcus Hill Cheek, who was a young British officer serving in India during the Indian Rebellion of 1857. The book describes the events leading up to Cheek’s death in Allahabad, a city in northern India, and his subsequent burial in the city’s cemetery. Meek provides a detailed account of the rebellion and the British response to it, including the siege of Lucknow and the battles of Cawnpore and Delhi. The book also includes letters and testimonials from Cheek’s family and friends, as well as from his fellow officers and soldiers. The Martyr of Allahabad is a moving tribute to a brave young man who gave his life in service to his country, and a valuable historical record of a pivotal moment in India’s struggle for independence. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
