The Grand Duchess of Gerolstein is a comic opera in three acts, written by Henri Meilhac and first performed in 1876. The story is set in the fictional kingdom of Gerolstein and revolves around the eccentric and flirtatious Grand Duchess, who is more interested in partying and romance than ruling her country. She falls in love with a handsome army officer, Fritz, but their romance is complicated by the fact that he is already engaged to the Duchess’s maid, Wanda. Meanwhile, the Chancellor of Gerolstein is plotting to overthrow the Grand Duchess and take control of the kingdom. The opera is filled with lively music, witty dialogue, and colorful characters, making it a beloved classic of the comic opera genre. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
