The Feast of Lanterns is a novel written by Louise Jordan Miln and published in 1920. Set in China during the early 20th century, the story revolves around the lives of two young women, one American and one Chinese, and their experiences with love, tradition, and cultural differences. The American protagonist, Mary, travels to China to visit her missionary uncle and aunt. There, she meets her cousin’s Chinese friend, Kwei-lan, and the two become fast friends. Kwei-lan is a well-educated and independent young woman who struggles to balance her traditional Chinese values with her desire for personal freedom. As Mary and Kwei-lan navigate their cultural differences, they both fall in love with the same man, a wealthy Chinese businessman named Shen. Shen is torn between his love for Kwei-lan and his duty to marry a woman of his own social class and ethnicity.Against the backdrop of the traditional Chinese festival of the Feast of Lanterns, the characters must confront their own desires and the expectations of their families and society. The novel explores themes of love, loyalty, tradition, and cultural identity, and offers a unique glimpse into the complexities of life in early 20th century China. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
