THE CONTROVERSIAL ROLE OF THE MEDIA IN CONFLICT RESOLUTION IN THE DRC: A critical analysis of the practical effectiveness of so-called ’peace media’. The media cannot remain neutral when it comes to issues of peace; this assertion forms the basis of a new theory of journalism: peace journalism. The Democratic Republic of the Congo has experienced more than a decade of a crisis complicated by a multitude of political, social, economic and geostrategic issues. Journalists called upon to cover developments in this crisis and the attempts being made to restore peace are therefore required to demonstrate a higher degree of professionalism. Today, in the eyes of the world, the Congo offers fertile ground for all those interested in the role played by the media in the conflict. A glance at the various broadcasting schedules of the media organisations analysed in this study reveals not only the diversity of programmes but also the apparent quality of the programming: programmes on national reconciliation, the advancement of women... the schedules are brimming with proactive programmes, yet the content is quite another matter.
