The Comedy of Canonization: In Four Scenes is a satirical play written by Milo Mahan in 1868. The play is set in the Vatican and centers around the absurdities and corruption of the process of canonization, the act of declaring someone a saint in the Catholic Church. The play is divided into four scenes, each depicting a different stage in the canonization process. The first scene shows the arrival of a group of pilgrims who are seeking to have their local saint canonized. The second scene depicts the examination of the candidate’s life and miracles by a group of cardinals, who are more concerned with politics and personal gain than with the candidate’s worthiness. The third scene shows the pope’s decision to canonize the candidate, despite the objections of his advisors and the lack of evidence of miracles. The final scene shows the celebration of the new saint’s feast day, which has been commercialized and turned into a spectacle for the masses. Throughout the play, Mahan uses humor and irony to criticize the corruption and hypocrisy of the Catholic Church, particularly in its canonization process. The play was controversial at the time of its publication, but it has since become a classic example of religious satire. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
