Avec l’avènement de la trithérapie antirétrovirale et le développement du concept de prévention combinée, la connaissance du statut sérologique est devenue essentielle aussi bien au niveau individuel, pour l’amélioration du bien-être, que collectif, pour la réduction de la transmission du virus. Ainsi, le dépistage est devenu la principale voie d’accès aux soins et aux services de prévention, comme le confirme la stratégie multisectorielle de l’ONUSIDA 90-90-90 dont le premier objectif est de dépister 90% des personnes vivant avec le VIH (PVVIH) estimées (ONUSIDA 2014). Malgré la création des centres de dépistage volontaire dans la majorité des pays, l’OMS estime que 54% des PVVIH ne connaissent pas leur statut sérologique, ce qui laisse penser que les modèles de dépistage actuels ne permettent pas d’atteindre les populations les plus exposées au risque de l’infection par le VIH.
