Com o advento da terapia antirretroviral tripla e o desenvolvimento do conceito de prevenção combinada, o conhecimento do estado do VIH tornou-se essencial tanto a nível individual, para melhorar o bem-estar, como a nível coletivo, para reduzir a transmissão do vírus. O rastreio tornou-se assim o principal meio de acesso aos serviços de cuidados e de prevenção, como confirmado pela estratégia multissectorial 90-90-90 da ONUSIDA, cujo primeiro objetivo é rastrear cerca de 90% das pessoas que vivem com o VIH (PVHIV) (ONUSIDA 2014), A OMS estima que 54% das PVHIV não conhecem o seu estado serológico, o que sugere que os actuais modelos de rastreio não estão a atingir as populações com maior risco de infeção pelo VIH.
