O Norte de Chipre tinha estado em escassez de água desde 1960 até à data devido aos limitados recursos de água doce, impacto climático e elevada taxa de evaporação. Não existem rios perenes como tal, a ilha depende em grande parte da água subterrânea como principal fonte de abastecimento. O aumento gradual da procura de água (doméstica, industrial e de irrigação) levou a uma extracção excessiva de água doce dos aquíferos disponíveis nos últimos anos, o que levou a um inesperado problema de alta qualidade da água como resultado da intrusão de água do mar, tornando a escassez mais alarmante. Este livro fornece uma actualização sobre a tendência do orçamento de água do Norte de Chipre, com base nos dados disponíveis até ao ano 2012. Isto foi conseguido através da avaliação da procura e oferta de água para o ano de 2011 e 2012 e depois comparando os resultados com os de pesquisas anteriores. A forma como a procura doméstica de água flutua ao longo do tempo e a da irrigação foram todas discutidas, as perdas de transporte, dessalinização e a capacidade actual de tratamento sanitário foram também investigadas e fornecidas. Além disso, foi feita uma avaliação da economia agrícola em 21 grupos de culturas que são cultivadas no Norte de Chipre em termos de consumo de água e rendimentos gerados.
