Il processo riproduttivo nei pesci teleostei è controllato dall’asse ipotalamo-ipofisi-gonadi, attivato da fattori esterni come la temperatura dell’acqua e il fotoperiodo. Tuttavia, la maggior parte dei pesci in cattività non depone le uova a causa di blocchi a diversi livelli del processo di maturazione gonadica, in particolare nelle specie reofile come il pacu (Piaractus mesopotamicus). In questo senso, vengono utilizzate diverse procedure per stimolare i processi riproduttivi di maturazione finale degli ovociti e garantire la produzione di avannotti. Tuttavia, la maturazione gonadica delle femmine in cattività inizia generalmente a dicembre, determinando che l’ingrasso dei giovani inizi a gennaio, perdendo così gran parte della temperatura ottimale di crescita degli avannotti. Per valutare l’effetto della manipolazione della temperatura e del fotoperiodo dello stagno sullo sviluppo delle gonadi nelle femmine di pacu in cattività, sono stati proposti quattro trattamenti sperimentali: T1: (controllo), T2: (fotoperiodo) luce artificiale, T3: (temperatura) serra e T4: (fotoperiodo e temperatura combinati).
