La determinazione del valore nutrizionale dei mangimi è stata l’obiettivo di numerosi studi sugli animali. Tuttavia, la valutazione di questi mangimi rappresenta una sfida per i nutrizionisti. In questo contesto, lo studio della digeribilità, del consumo e della produzione fecale è essenziale nella formulazione delle diete animali. La determinazione diretta della produzione fecale, nota come raccolta totale delle feci in vivo, è un processo costoso, che richiede il controllo dell’assunzione e dell’escrezione giornaliera, l’adattamento degli animali a gabbie o box o a sacchi di raccolta negli animali al pascolo, il che può essere impraticabile in alcune situazioni. Sebbene in alcuni casi le procedure in vivo presentino dei limiti, esse rimangono il punto di riferimento sia per la valutazione degli alimenti sia per la convalida di metodi di determinazione alternativi. Per sviluppare alternative che consentano di stimare la produzione fecale, la digeribilità e il consumo indiretto, sono state proposte tecniche di indicatori, che secondo Owens e Hanson (1992) sono monitor chimici per la determinazione quantitativa e qualitativa di fenomeni fisiologici e nutrizionali.
