O grão-de-bico é a cultura de leguminosas mais dominante na Índia, tanto em termos de área como de produção. O grão-de-bico é afetado por várias doenças transmitidas pelas sementes, pelo solo e pelo ar, responsáveis pela redução do seu rendimento. Os agentes patogénicos transmitidos pelo solo, como Sclerotium rolfsii (podridão do colo), Fusarium oxysporium f. sp. ciceri (murchidão vascular) e Rhizoctonia bataticola (podridão seca da raiz), são responsáveis por causar doenças desde a fase de plântula até à floração e à formação de vagens. A podridão do colo causada por Sclerotium rolfsii Sacc. é uma importante doença do grão-de-bico transmitida pelo solo, causando a podridão das sementes e a mortalidade das plântulas na fase inicial de crescimento da cultura até 45 dias.
