As discussões em grupos de discussão são uma ferramenta de investigação exploratória, ou seja, um grupo estruturado utilizado para explorar os pensamentos e sentimentos das pessoas e obter informações detalhadas sobre um determinado tópico ou questão. As discussões dos grupos de discussão duram entre uma hora e meia e duas horas. Se a discussão for bem gerida, permite que os sentimentos mais profundos sobre um assunto surjam naturalmente. Uma discussão de grupo de discussão é uma sessão aprofundada em que um pequeno número de pessoas, normalmente oito a doze da população-alvo, sob a orientação de um facilitador (moderador), discute tópicos importantes para um determinado estudo ou projeto. Por natureza, as discussões de grupos de discussão são um método em que os tópicos abordados são flexíveis e a discussão começa com questões mais gerais e passa lentamente para questões mais específicas. Este livro vai centrar-se em destacar os méritos e os deméritos das discussões de grupos de discussão como instrumento de recolha de dados na monitorização e avaliação.
