Taras Bulba spielt in der Ukraine in der ersten Hälfte des 17. Jahrhunderts und erzählt die Geschichte des alten Saporoger Kosaken Taras Bulba und seiner beiden Söhne, Andrej und Ostap, die erst an der Akademie in Kiew studieren, um sich später in der Saporoger Sitsch anderen Kosaken im Aufstand gegen Polen anzuschließen. Bei der Belagerung von Dubno lief sein Sohn Andrej wegen eines Mädchens zu den gegnerischen Polen über und wurde darauf hin von Taras Bulba erschossen. Nachdem die Polen Bulba zu fassen bekahmen, verbrannten sie ihn bei lebendigem Leibe. Nikolai Gogol (1809-1852) war ein russischer Schriftsteller. Im Jahr 1831 lernte Gogol den Dichter Alexander Puschkin kennen, der ihm den Weg in die russische Literatur wies. Puschkin wurde ihm Freund und Förderer. So regte Puschkin an, den Revisor und Die toten Seelen zu schreiben - beide Werke fanden später höchste Anerkennung. Er feierte mit seinen volkstümlichen ukrainischen Erzählungen Abende auf dem Weiler bei Dikanka einen Überraschungserfolg. Es ist die einzigartige Kombination der derben Vertep-Komödiantik mit dem ukrainischen Lokalkolorit und märchenhafter, bisweilen unheimlicher Phantastik, die den Erzählband zum Erfolg machte.
