The Nose

A grey dawn breaks over Saint Petersburg, and with it, a barber’s ordinary morning unravels into the utterly bizarre. An esteemed official wakes to discover his nose has vanished-gone without a trace-plunging the city’s bustling world of bureaucrats, shopkeepers, and townsfolk into a farcical search for both dignity and identity. In this absurdist short story, the familiar streets and chilly grandeur of nineteenth-century Russia become the stage for a surreal comedy, where the boundaries between reality and the ridiculous dissolve with every turn.At once sharp and playful, the narrative exposes the peculiarities of Russian social order, satirising the labyrinthine bureaucracy and the vanities of those who serve it. The tale’s humour is both sly and biting, revealing the absurdities lurking beneath the surface of everyday life. Through deft characterisation and a keen eye for the comic potential in the mundane, the author crafts a world where a missing nose becomes a symbol of social standing, ambition, and the desperate search for meaning in a society obsessed with rank. The novella’s wit and surreal twists draw readers into a uniquely Russian literary fiction experience, blending classic Russian humour with pointed social commentary. The Saint Petersburg setting is rendered with a vividness that captures both the city’s grandeur and its eccentricities, making it a touchstone of Russian cultural classics and a definitive example of satirical Russian story-telling. The narrative’s absurdity is underpinned by a subtle critique of the era’s rigid hierarchies, offering a glimpse into a world where the ordinary is forever at risk of tipping into chaos. This book was out of print for decades and is now republished by Alpha Editions.
