Nichtsteroidale entzündungshemmende Medikamente gehören zu den weltweit am häufigsten verschriebenen Medikamentengruppen und sind als schmerzstillende, fiebersenkende und entzündungshemmende Mittel hochwirksam. Allerdings ist ihre Einnahme auch mit unerwünschten Nebenwirkungen wie Magengeschwüren und Magen-Darm-Blutungen verbunden. Es besteht immer ein großer Bedarf an der Entwicklung von COX-2-spezifischen Hemmern, um diese Nebenwirkungen zu vermeiden. Der vorliegende Bericht enthält eine kurze Einführung in das Thema Entzündungen und die Biosynthese von Prostaglandinen mit Schwerpunkt auf den Enzymen COX-1 und COX-2. Der Hauptschwerpunkt liegt auf der Literaturrecherche zu Indanderivaten und experimentellen Arbeiten, die im Labor durchgeführt wurden, um neuere und weniger ulzerogene NSAIDs zu entwickeln.
