Os anti-inflamatórios não esteróides são um dos grupos de medicamentos mais frequentemente prescritos em todo o mundo e são altamente eficazes como agentes analgésicos, antipiréticos e anti-inflamatórios. No entanto, a sua utilização está também associada a acontecimentos adversos como a ulceração gastro-duodenal e a hemorragia gastro-intestinal. Há sempre uma grande necessidade de desenvolver inibidores específicos da COX-2 para evitar os efeitos secundários. O presente relatório contém uma breve introdução à inflamação e à biossíntese das prostaglandinas, com ênfase nas enzimas COX-1 e COX-2. O foco principal é o levantamento bibliográfico dos derivados do indano e o trabalho experimental realizado no laboratório, numa tentativa de desenvolver AINEs mais recentes e menos ulcerogénicos.
