Le syndrome métabolique est un ensemble de pathologies qui augmentent le risque de maladie cardiaque, d’AVC et de diabète. Il se caractérise par une obésité abdominale, une hypertension artérielle, une hyperglycémie et une dyslipidémie, nécessitant au moins trois critères de diagnostic: un tour de taille >102cm chez les hommes ou >88cm chez les femmes, des triglycérides ≥1,7mmol/L, un faible taux de HDL, une hypertension (≥130/85mmHg) et une glycémie à jeun ≥1.1g/L. Les facteurs contribuant à son développement sont l’obésité, la sédentarité, la génétique, l’âge, l’ethnicité, les changements hormonaux, l’alimentation, le tabagisme et la consommation d’alcool. Sa physiopathologie est complexe impliquant une résistance à l’insuline (RI) liée à un excès de graisse viscérale, qui libère des cytokines pro-inflammatoires et des acides gras libres, exacerbant la RI et l’inflammation. La RI perturbe également le métabolisme des lipides, provoquant une dyslipidémie, et peut altérer la fonction endothéliale, favorisant ainsi l’athérogénèse. Cela augmente le risque de maladie coronarienne, d’AVC, les artériopathies périphériques, d’insuffisance cardiaque et de maladie rénale.
