La dynamique de l’utilisation et de la couverture des sols (LULC) à Riyadh sur une décennie a été analysée en détail à l’aide de la plateforme Google Earth Engine (GEE). En exploitant la collection d’images Landsat 8 et la collection d’images nocturnes de mai à août pour les années 2013 et 2023, nous avons été en mesure de générer des ensembles de données perspicaces capturant le paysage changeant de la région. Notre approche implique un modèle de classification Random Forest (RF) qui a constamment affiché des scores de précision louables supérieurs à 92% pour les deux années. L’une des découvertes notables de l’étude a été l’expansion urbaine prononcée, en particulier autour de la ville de Riyad. En l’espace de dix ans seulement, l’urbanisation a considérablement augmenté, affectant l’environnement écologique plus large de la région. Il est intéressant de noter que la partie nord-est de Riyad est devenue le point central de cette croissance, signalant une croissance urbaine rapide de l’étalement urbain et du développement. Une comparaison entre les deux années indique une augmentation de 21,51 % des zones bâties, révélant le rythme de transformation de l’étalement urbain. En revanche, les schémas de couverture végétale présentent une image plus nuancée.
