Tra i vari problemi a cui danno origine, la produzione di percolati è uno dei più preoccupanti. Questi effluenti liquidi, generati dall’infiltrazione dell’acqua piovana attraverso i rifiuti solidi, sono carichi di composti organici, metalli pesanti, nutrienti, microrganismi patogeni e sostanze chimiche tossiche. Se il percolato non viene trattato adeguatamente, può contaminare le acque sotterranee e di superficie, degradare il suolo e avere un impatto duraturo sulla salute degli ecosistemi e delle popolazioni locali.
