L’aumento globale della prevalenza dell’obesità, soprattutto nei bambini e negli adolescenti, desta grande preoccupazione. Poiché il problema sembra essere in rapido aumento sia nei bambini che negli adulti, le vere conseguenze per la salute potrebbero diventare pienamente evidenti solo in futuro. Le principali conseguenze per la salute associate al sovrappeso e all’obesità sono NIDDM, CHD, HTN, malattie della cistifellea, problemi psicologici e alcuni tipi di cancro. L’individuazione dell’obesità nei bambini ha fatto scattare un campanello d’allarme; per questo motivo gli studi recenti si sono concentrati su questo gruppo molto vulnerabile. È essenziale disporre di dati sulla prevalenza dell’obesità nei bambini in età scolare e sui fattori responsabili dell’obesità per suggerire misure di intervento. Questo studio è un passo in questa direzione.
