In particolare, la regione del Gujarat settentrionale è costellata da un gran numero di zone umide, piccole e grandi. Il Thol Lake Wildlife Sanctuary è l’unico tra questi ad avere la protezione legale di santuario della fauna selvatica, principalmente per proteggere i suoi ricchi uccelli acquatici migratori e residenti. Gli studi floristici del Thol Lake Wildlife Sanctuary, popolarmente noto come Thol Bird Sanctuary (TBS), erano preoccupanti perché, a differenza di altri due santuari del Gujarat settentrionale, questo è rimasto intatto.
