La scarsità di acqua di buona qualità è un fattore limitante per l’agricoltura irrigua, soprattutto nelle regioni aride e semi-aride, ed è necessario identificare genotipi con potenziale economico che siano tolleranti allo stress salino, nonché strategie adeguate per l’irrigazione con acqua salina. L’obiettivo è stato quindi quello di valutare la tolleranza di genotipi di cotone colorati allo stress salino cumulativo in diversi stadi dello sviluppo della pianta, nonché l’influenza delle condizioni di salinità in cui i semi sono stati formati in un nuovo ciclo di coltivazione. Sono stati condotti due esperimenti in serra, valutando tre genotipi di cotone naturalmente colorati. Nel primo esperimento sono state studiate sette strategie di gestione della salinità, variando la qualità dell’acqua applicata in diverse fasi del ciclo. Nel secondo esperimento, sono stati valutati gli effetti dell’utilizzo di acqua ad alta salinità (9 dS m-1), alternata ad acqua a bassa concentrazione salina (0,8 dS m-1), sulla produzione di piante da semi raccolti nel primo esperimento, sottoposti a dieci strategie di gestione della salinità, variando anche lo stadio fenologico delle piante di cotone.
