It is well known that the police profession is one of the most stressful and demanding in the world, owing to the numerous demands that police officers must meet in the course of their work. It can be assumed that the scope of duties of WEGA officers, particularly with regard to operational situations involving heightened risk and additional subliminal stressors, encompasses numerous factors that can generate stress. Following a theoretical examination of the topic of stress and stress management, the study first examines which operational situations are stressful for WEGA officers. Subsequently, the preferred stress management strategies of WEGA officers are identified and the issue of how they deal with emotions is explored. In addition, the study investigates possible differences in work-related stress situations, stress management and the handling of emotions between officers with more or less service experience, as well as between smokers and non-smokers; furthermore, the identified sources of stress are compared with those of security guards and criminal investigators (Steinbauer et al., 2002).
