L’incidenza della povertà in Nigeria è più alta tra le popolazioni rurali, cioè tra le famiglie che dipendono principalmente dal reddito agricolo. La diversificazione del reddito è quindi vista come un modo per garantire il reddito e aumentare il benessere delle famiglie agricole. Più alto è il grado di diversificazione delle famiglie contadine, meglio stanno in termini di reddito totale e di mezzi di sussistenza. È quindi necessario che le famiglie agricole guardino oltre l’agricoltura come una buona strategia per aumentare i loro guadagni, incrementare il loro reddito totale e migliorare le loro condizioni di vita.
