Questa raccolta delinea lo sviluppo cronologico della ricerca sperimentale che ha posto le basi per la comprensione della fotosintesi. Inizia con l’esperimento del salice di Jan Baptista van Helmont del 1644, che attribuì erroneamente l’aumento di biomassa delle piante esclusivamente all’acqua, spingendo a indagare ulteriormente sulla nutrizione delle piante. L’esperimento di Charles Bonnet sulle foglie illuminate del 1754 dimostrò il ruolo della luce nello scambio di gas, mentre Joseph Priestley e Jan Ingenhousz dimostrarono che le piante verdi purificano l’aria alla luce del sole. Jean Senebier e Nicolas-Théodore de Saussure stabilirono che l’anidride carbonica e l’acqua sono fattori essenziali per la crescita delle piante. Nel XIX secolo fu identificata chimicamente la clorofilla, Julius von Sachs utilizzò la colorazione allo iodio per tracciare la formazione dell’amido e Hugo von Mohl scoprì i cloroplasti come sede della fotosintesi. Il XX secolo ha portato grandi progressi: Emerson e Arnold quantificarono le unità fotosintetiche, Hill dimostrò l’evoluzione dell’ossigeno dall’acqua e Ruben e Kamen utilizzarono gli isotopi per rintracciarne l’origine. Arnon confermò la sintesi dell’ATP e Calvin mappò le reazioni al buio.
