Les scénarios climatiques actuels montrent qu’à l’avenir, les périodes de sécheresse seront plus longues et les précipitations plus intenses, ce qui accroît la vulnérabilité de nos systèmes d’approvisionnement en eau potable et de gestion des eaux usées. Les îles sont sensibles au changement climatique à venir car elles disposent de faibles ressources en eau et rarement d’un système municipal d’approvisionnement en eau. Les systèmes d’approvisionnement en eau actuels sont linéaires et les eaux usées purifiées sont renvoyées directement dans la nature. Pour parvenir à une gestion durable des eaux usées, peut-on introduire une utilisation de l’eau qui imite le cycle hydrologique ? L’objectif de l’étude est d’examiner l’approvisionnement en eau, le système d’approvisionnement en eau et d’assainissement, l’attitude à l’égard de la réutilisation des eaux usées, et de déterminer si l’aquaculture circulaire est un système durable dans les pays en développement.Les résultats indiquent que les insulaires gèrent généralement leurs ressources en eau et qu’une attitude dubitative à l’égard de la réutilisation des eaux noires peut être due à ce que l’on appelle le facteur de dégoût. Malgré une acceptation variable de la réutilisation de l’eau, davantage de systèmes d’eau circulaire devraient être introduits sur l’île, ce qui permettrait aux pays en développement de gérer leurs eaux usées de manière plus durable.
