Soll und Haben ist ein 1855 erschienener Roman in sechs Büchern von Gustav Freytag. Er gehört zu den meistgelesenen Romanen im 19. Jahrhundert und ist ein Vertreter des bürgerlichen Realismus. Anton Wohlfart, Sohn eines verstorbenen Buchhalters, wird auf die Bitte seines Vaters hin in das Kontor von Herrn T. O. Schröter in Breslau aufgenommen. Auf dem Weg zur Stadt lernt er durch Zufall Lenore, die Tochter des Freiherrn Rothsattel kennen, in die er sich verliebt. Am selben Tag begegnet er auch Veitel Itzig, einem ehemaligen jüdischen Schulkameraden, welcher ihn in die Stadt begleitet. Der junge Anton arbeitet sehr gewissenhaft in diesem Kontor, was ihm eine verkürzte Lehrzeit verschafft. Sein neuer Freund, Fritz Fink, erreicht bald, dass Anton zu Tanzstunden des Adels eingeladen wird, wo er Lenore wieder trifft. Als er aber von einigen Gerüchten seine Herkunft betreffend erfährt, bricht er mit der adeligen Gesellschaft, was ihm wegen der Bekanntschaft mit Lenore sehr leid tut. Später lernt er Bernhard kennen, den Sohn des jüdischen Kaufmanns Hirsch Ehrenthal, welchen er sofort in sein Herz schließt. Gustav Freytag (1816-1895) war ein deutscher Schriftsteller.
