La scrittura comporta un’attività motoria di rappresentazione grafica della struttura della lingua ed è quindi considerata un’attività prassica. L’evoluzione grafica del bambino è il risultato di una tendenza naturale, espressiva, rappresentativa, che rivela il suo mondo particolare, dove l’interazione sociale ha un peso decisivo. Pertanto, scrivere in modo leggibile è diventata una capacità indispensabile per l’individuo per adattarsi e integrarsi nell’ambiente sociale. Non è raro incontrare bambini con difficoltà di scrittura, con una grafia brutta, con difficoltà a tracciare linee rette, senza alcuna lesione neurologica, né deviazioni psicologiche o deficienze intellettuali. L’applicazione della Scala di Disgrafia ha permesso di individuare grafie irregolari.
