Girolamo oder Hieronymus Savonarola (1452-1498) war ein italienischer Dominikaner und Bußprediger. Er erregte Aufsehen mit seiner Kritik am Lebenswandel des herrschenden Adels und Klerus und war de facto Herrscher über Florenz von 1494 bis kurz vor seiner Hinrichtung 1498. Er gehört zu den Vorläufer-Figuren der Reformation. 1490 wurde er auf Bitten Lorenzo de Medicis wiederum als Lektor nach Florenz berufen. Er setzte seine Reformpredigten fort. Nicht nur kirchliche Missstände, sondern auch Reichtum, ungerechte Herrschaft und die Ausrichtung des zeitgenössischen Humanismus an Idealen der Antike prangerte er an. Gleichwohl blieben die Medici ihm wohlgesinnt, und Lorenzos Sohn Piero unterstützte maßgeblich Savonarolas Wahl zum Prior von San Marco. Tatsächlich war er schließlich jedoch zu einem guten Teil für die Vertreibung der Medici 1494 aus Florenz verantwortlich. Schon am Sterbebett von Lorenzo verlangte er 1492, dass dieser auf alle Herrschaftsansprüche seiner Familie verzichten solle. Dass Savonarola in kleinem Kreis mit dem 25. Juli 1492 das Sterbedatum von Papst Innozenz VIII. korrekt voraussagte, könnte sein späteres Ansehen als Prophet gefördert haben... Franz Leopold Ranke (1795-1886) war ein deutscher Historiker, Historiograph des preußischen Staates, Hochschullehrer und königlich preußischer Wirklicher Geheimer Rat. Leopold von Ranke gilt als einer der Gründerväter der modernen Geschichtswissenschaft, der sich um eine möglichst große Objektivität bei der Wiedergabe der Geschichte bemühte.
