Sans Merci: Or Kestrels And Falcons is a novel written by George Alfred Lawrence and published in 1872. The story takes place in the 15th century and follows the life of a young Englishman named Lionel Damer. Lionel is a skilled archer and a member of the English army. He is sent to France to fight against the French in the Hundred Years’ War. During his time in France, Lionel falls in love with a beautiful French woman named Gabrielle. However, their love is forbidden due to the ongoing war between their countries. Despite the odds against them, Lionel and Gabrielle continue to meet in secret. The novel also includes a subplot involving a group of mercenaries known as the ''Kestrels'' and their leader, a man named Sans Merci. The Kestrels are hired by the French to fight against the English, but they have their own agenda and are not entirely loyal to their employers. As the war rages on, Lionel and Gabrielle’s love is tested and the Kestrels become more involved in the conflict. The novel explores themes of love, loyalty, and betrayal in a historical setting. Lawrence’s vivid descriptions of medieval battles and courtly love make this novel a captivating read for fans of historical fiction. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
