Und wer am niichtlichen Firmament einen funkelnden Stern bewun­ dert, sieht womoglich nur noch den Schein einer liingst schon verlosche­ nen Sonne auf ihrer unendlichen Reise durch die Licht jahre des Universums. Wir, die wir wie selbstverstiindlich mit New York, Rio de Janeiro und anderen, weit entfemten Orten telefonieren, ohne uns je Gedanken tiber Funktion und Geschichte der Nachrichtentechnik zu machen, bedtirfen wohl tatsiichlich erst eines Blickes in die Tiefen des Alls, um nachzuvoll­ ziehen, was die Erfindung der Telegrafie rur die Menschen des 19.Jahr­ hunderts bedeutet haben mag. Bis zum 27.Juli 1866, dem Tag, an dem die ersten Kabeltelegramme zwischen Neuer und Alter Welt ausgetauscht wurden, dauerte es niimlich nicht nur Bruchteile von Sekunden -so wie heute -, auch nicht Minuten, sondem gleich Tage oder gar Wochen, bis eine Nachricht per Schiff tiber den Atlantik zu ihrem Empfiinger gelangte. Und dies war damals die einzige Moglichkeit der Kommunikation zwi­ schen den Kontinenten.
