En Salario, precio y ganancia se transcriben una serie de conferencias que dio Marx en inglés el 20 y 27 de junio de 1865 y que entregó a la Primera Asociación Internacional de Trabajadores. En ellas, el filósofo alemán intenta refutar la teoría político-económica del socialista John Weston, que defendía que un incremento de los salarios no tendría por qué beneficiar a la situación de los obreros y que la actividad de los sindicatos era perjudicial. Además, Marx cargaba contra los proudhonistas y los lassalleanos, que no compartían la lucha económica de los obreros y los sindicatos. Salario, precio y ganancia fue publicado por primera vez en folleto en Londres en 1898 por la hija de Marx, Eleanor Marx Aveling, bajo el título Value, price and profit
