W obliczu trudności z wejściem na rynek pracy w afrykańskich miastach niektóre osoby angażują się w działalność z zakresu rzemiosła. Stają się w ten sposób rzemieślnikami miejskimi. W wybranej przez siebie dziedzinie starają się zachowywać jak profesjonaliści w drobnych zawodach, korzystając z wiedzy i doświadczenia zdobytych tu i ówdzie. Jednak niski poziom ich kwalifikacji oraz jakość wykonywanej pracy skazują ich na funkcjonowanie w sektorze nieformalnym. Ci uczestnicy życia gospodarczego postrzegani są jako rzemieślnicy-amatorzy i często są przyczyną nieporozumień z klientami o wyższym statusie społeczno-ekonomicznym. W rezultacie elita, stanowiąca część ich klienteli i bardzo często poszukująca dobrze wykonanej pracy, pozostaje sceptyczna wobec kompetencji tych rzemieślników.
