Faced with difficulties entering the workforce in African cities, some individuals turn to activities classified as crafts. They thus become urban artisans. In their chosen field, they strive to conduct themselves as professionals in small trades, drawing on skills and experience acquired here and there. However, their lack of formal qualifications and the quality of their work confine them to the informal sector. These economic actors are perceived as amateur craftsmen and are often the source of misunderstandings with their clients, who possess greater socioeconomic status. As a result, the elite-who make up a significant portion of their clientele and are frequently seeking work done to a high standard-remain skeptical of these artisans’ skills.
