Questo studio ha valutato la conformità dei programmi di salute e sicurezza con gli standard stabiliti nelle misure di riduzione del rischio di catastrofi in alcuni istituti di ricerca orticola del Kenya. Lo studio ha rilevato che il sottosettore orticolo è uno dei maggiori consumatori di pesticidi. I pesticidi sono ampiamente utilizzati per la prevenzione e il controllo di parassiti, malattie, erbe infestanti, funghi e nematodi (OMS, 1986). Dato che ai sensi del regolamento sui prodotti fitosanitari 1107/2009 (pesticidi) e del regolamento sui biocidi 528/2012 (biocidi) le 'proprietà di interferenza endocrina' sono state definite basate sul rischio. Ciò pone un grave problema per i lavoratori esposti e i loro datori di lavoro, poiché queste sostanze sono in uso costante. La letteratura sulla medicina del lavoro evidenzia gli effetti negativi sulla salute associati all’esposizione dei lavoratori agricoli ai pesticidi (Hanke e Jurewicz, 2004). La ricercatrice ha ritenuto importante considerare vari fattori abilitanti per la salute e la sicurezza e come queste misure possano essere gestite efficacemente come strategia nella riduzione del rischio di catastrofi.
