Este estudo avaliou a conformidade dos programas de saúde e segurança com as medidas de normas estabelecidas na estratégia de redução do risco de catástrofes em instituições de investigação hortícola selecionadas no Quénia. O estudo observou que o subsector da horticultura é um dos maiores consumidores de pesticidas. Os pesticidas são amplamente utilizados para a prevenção e o controlo de pragas, doenças, ervas daninhas, fungos e nemátodos (OMS, 1986). Dado que, nos termos do Regulamento (CE) n.º 1107/2009 relativo aos produtos fitofarmacêuticos (pesticidas) e do Regulamento (CE) n.º 528/2012 relativo aos produtos biocidas (biocidas), as 'propriedades desreguladoras do sistema endócrino' foram designadas com base no perigo. Este facto coloca um grave problema para os trabalhadores expostos e para os seus empregadores, uma vez que estas substâncias estão em constante utilização. A literatura sobre medicina do trabalho destaca os efeitos negativos para a saúde associados à exposição dos trabalhadores agrícolas aos pesticidas (Hanke e Jurewicz, 2004). O pesquisador considerou importante considerar vários facilitadores de saúde e segurança e como estas medidas podem ser geridas efetivamente como estratégia na redução do risco de desastres.
