Książka ta ma na celu pokazanie znaczenia społeczeństwa obywatelskiego w procesie rozwiązywania konfliktów. Organizacje społeczeństwa obywatelskiego, w tym organizacje pozarządowe, grupy kobiet, grupy studenckie, związki zawodowe i inne, odegrały kluczową rolę w kampanii przeciwko apartheidowi i miały szczególny wpływ na rozwój i proces Komisji Prawdy i Pojednania (TRC). Dotyczy to zarówno poziomu krajowego, jak i globalnego, gdzie międzynarodowe kampanie solidarności pomogły wywrzeć ogromną presję na rząd apartheidu w RPA. Należy jednak zauważyć, że przypadek ruchu oporu przeciwko rządowi Republiki Południowej Afryki był bardzo specyficznym rodzajem konfliktu, a zatem specyfika procesu rozwiązywania tego konfliktu może nie mieć pełnego zastosowania w innych przypadkach. Pomimo tego ograniczenia, z przeprowadzonych badań jasno wynika, że społeczeństwo obywatelskie odegrało kluczową rolę w procesie zniesienia reżimu apartheidu i odbudowy demokracji konstytucyjnej po zakończeniu ery apartheidu.
