Este livro procura demonstrar a importância da sociedade civil no processo de resolução de conflitos. As organizações da sociedade civil, incluindo ONGs, grupos de mulheres, grupos estudantis, sindicatos e outros, foram membros fundamentais da campanha contra o apartheid e foram especialmente influentes no desenvolvimento e no processo da Comissão da Verdade e Reconciliação (CVR). Isso é verdade tanto a nível nacional como a nível global, onde campanhas de solidariedade internacional ajudaram a exercer uma grande pressão sobre o governo do apartheid da África do Sul. No entanto, é importante notar que o caso do movimento de resistência contra o governo sul-africano foi um tipo de conflito muito específico e que as particularidades desse processo de resolução de conflitos podem, portanto, não ser totalmente aplicáveis a outros casos. Apesar dessa limitação, fica evidente a partir da pesquisa realizada aqui que a sociedade civil foi crucial no processo de fim do regime do apartheid e na reconstrução da democracia constitucional que se seguiu ao fim da era do apartheid.
