Dzieci-żołnierze walczą na całym świecie w wielu konfliktach zbrojnych, a problem ten dotyka szczególnie Afrykę. Niniejsza praca poświęcona jest problematyce afrykańskich dzieci-żołnierzy, którzy stali się ważnym narzędziem współczesnej wojny. W kontekście niniejszej pracy jako dzieci-żołnierze określa się wszystkich chłopców i dziewczynki poniżej 18 roku życia, którzy aktywnie uczestniczą w walkach, jak również tych, którzy wykonują różnorodne zadania. Dzieci-żołnierze istnieją od początku wojen, ale po zakończeniu konfliktu zimnej wojny procesy konfliktowe uległy zmianie, a liczba aktywnie zaangażowanych dzieci-żołnierzy dramatycznie wzrosła. Wysoki wzrost liczby dzieci-żołnierzy wynika z nasilenia konfliktów wewnętrznych. Sierra Leone, gdzie żądza diamentów wywołała wojnę trwającą całą dekadę, oraz Uganda, gdzie interesy polityczne uniemożliwiają zakończenie wojny, są przykładami krajów, w których wykorzystywanie dzieci-żołnierzy osiągnęło wysoki poziom.
