L’argento è una risorsa preziosa in via di esaurimento e nel prossimo futuro si esaurirà. Inoltre, il nostro Paese non produce questo metallo in questo momento. L’estrazione dell’argento da rifiuti contenenti argento, come le pellicole fotografiche a raggi X usate, consentirà di risparmiare notevolmente la valuta estera necessaria per importare questo metallo. I rifiuti di pellicole fotografiche a raggi X contenenti l’1,5-2% (peso/peso) di argento metallico nero potrebbero essere utilizzati per il recupero e il riutilizzo. Circa il 18-20% del fabbisogno mondiale di argento è fornito dal riciclaggio dei rifiuti fotografici. L’estrazione dell’argento dal minerale è costosa e dannosa per l’ambiente. La domanda globale di argento rimane in costante aumento, passando da 25.700 tonnellate metriche nel 2016 a 30.500 tonnellate metriche nel 2021. La maggior parte dei rifiuti fotografici e radiografici contiene tiosolfato d’argento con una concentrazione di 5 parti per milione (ppm). Esistono diverse tecnologie per recuperare l’argento dalle pellicole fotografiche a raggi X, come la combustione della pellicola, l’elettrolisi, la sostituzione del metallo, la precipitazione chimica e i metodi batterici ed enzimatici.
