A prata é um recurso precioso que se está a esgotar e, num futuro próximo, será totalmente consumida. Para além disso, o nosso país não produz o metal neste momento. A extracção de prata a partir de resíduos que contenham prata suficiente, como as películas fotográficas de raios X usadas, permitirá economizar consideravelmente as divisas estrangeiras necessárias para importar este metal. Os resíduos de películas fotográficas de raios X que contêm 1,5-2% (w/w) de prata metálica negra seriam utilizados para recuperação e reutilização. Cerca de 18-20% das necessidades mundiais de prata são supridas pela reciclagem de resíduos fotográficos. A extracção de prata do minério é dispendiosa e prejudicial para o ambiente. A procura global de prata continua a aumentar de forma constante, passando de 25 700 toneladas métricas em 2016 para 30 500 toneladas métricas em 2021. A maioria dos resíduos fotográficos e de raios X contém tiossulfato de prata com uma concentração de prata de 5 partes por milhão (ppm). Existem várias tecnologias para recuperar a prata da película fotográfica de raios X, como a queima da película, a electrólise, a substituição de metais, a precipitação química e os métodos bacterianos e enzimáticos.
