Il genere Aeromonas comprende importanti patogeni umani che causano setticemia primaria e secondaria in pazienti immunocompromessi, gravi infezioni da ferite in individui sani e in pazienti sottoposti a terapia con sanguisughe medicinali. La gastroenterite, la manifestazione clinica più comune, rimane controversa. Il genere è composto da psicrofili e mesofili provenienti dal suolo e dagli ambienti acquatici e causa diversi tipi di malattie a molti animali a sangue caldo e freddo. A causa dell’uso eccessivo di antibiotici ad ampio spettro in ambito clinico, in agricoltura e negli incubatoi, si è verificato un aumento della resistenza agli antibiotici tra le specie di Aeromonas che causano malattie.
