Recentemente, os materiais cerâmicos porosos são utilizados como componentes em aplicações especiais e avançadas de engenharia. Estas incluem a filtragem de líquidos e partículas em fluxos de gás, queimadores porosos, dispositivos biomédicos, estruturas leves de suporte de carga, painéis em sanduíche, materiais de núcleo, isolamento térmico, células de combustível, como condutor e isolador, etc. O fabrico de espumas cerâmicas de células abertas é de interesse científico e tecnológico devido à sua capacidade de interagir com átomos, iões e moléculas não só na sua superfície, mas também em toda a massa do material. Na presente revisão, são discutidos os três métodos básicos (isto é, réplica, formação direta de espuma e queima da rota fugitiva) para a preparação de espumas cerâmicas. As espumas de carbono altamente porosas e interligadas foram fabricadas através da via do modelo. As espumas de sílica porosas são obtidas através da sinterização de modelos de espuma de PU macro-fundidos com o sol de sílica hidrolisada. Ambas as espumas eram altamente interligadas, com porosidade e distribuição de tamanho de poros uniformes.
