La mission générale des programmes de formation des enseignants a toujours été la même - préparer les enseignants en poste et en formation initiale à l’enseignement - mais la façon dont le secteur comprend la manière dont les enseignants apprennent à faire leur travail a sensiblement évolué au cours des dernières décennies (Freeman&Johnson, 1998). À l’opposé du paradigme positiviste traditionnel, qui dicte et modélise des comportements d’enseignement spécifiques pour obtenir des résultats déterminés, se trouve la perspective théorique socioculturelle vygostskienne, qui reconnaît l’apprentissage comme un processus unique façonné et modelé par le contexte social dans lequel l’individu s’insère. Cette perspective a pris de l’importance dans le scénario de la formation des enseignants de langues secondes/étrangères et a suscité un appel à la recherche sur l’apprentissage des enseignants. Rejoignant les diverses voix visant à répondre à cet appel, l’objectif ultime de cette étude était de montrer le pouvoir de la perspective socioculturelle pour dévoiler la cognition des enseignants de langues. Ainsi, cette étude examine comment les conceptions de l’enseignement de deux enseignants expérimentés d’anglais langue étrangère sont apparues et ont évolué au fil d’une expérience d’enseignement d’un semestre dans laquelle leur pratique pédagogique est l’objet d’étude.
