L’augmentation de la résistance aux antimicrobiens, ainsi que leurs effets secondaires indésirables et les interactions médicamenteuses, ont rendu nécessaire la recherche constante de nouveaux médicaments efficaces et peu toxiques. Au cours des dernières décennies, plusieurs plantes ont fait l’objet de recherches sur l’extraction et la caractérisation de principes actifs thérapeutiques. Les produits naturels sous forme d’extraits de plantes constituent un riche patrimoine culturel et représentent une solution alternative aux problèmes de santé publique. Ils font donc actuellement l’objet de recherches scientifiques visant à garantir leur qualité technologique, leur efficacité thérapeutique et leur sécurité. Dans le cadre de leur caractérisation, des tests sont effectués pour déterminer leur activité biologique antibactérienne et antifongique.
