A volume in Research in Science EducationSeries Editors Dennis W. Sunal, University of Alabamaand Emmett L. Wright, Kansas State UniversityResearch in Science Education (RISE) Volume 6, Research Based Undergraduate ScienceTeaching examines research, theory, and practice concerning issues of teaching science withundergraduates. This RISE volume addresses higher education faculty and all who teach entrylevel science. The focus is on helping undergraduates develop a basic science literacy leading toscientific expertise. RISE Volume 6 focuses on research-based reforms leading to best practicesin teaching undergraduates in science and engineering. The goal of this volume is to provide a research foundation for the professional development offaculty teaching undergraduate science. Such science instruction should have short- and longtermimpacts on student outcomes. The goal was carried out through a series of events overseveral years. The website at http://nseus.org documents materials from these events. The international call for manuscripts for thisvolume requested the inclusion of major priorities and critical research areas, methodological concerns, and results of implementationof faculty professional development programs and reform in teaching in undergraduate science classrooms. In developing research manuscripts to be reviewed for RISE, Volume 6, researchers were asked to consider the status and effectivenessof current and experimental practices for reforming undergraduate science courses involving all undergraduates, including groups ofstudents who are not always well represented in STEM education. To influence practice, it is important to understand how researchbasedpractice is made and how it is implemented. The volume should be considered as a first step in thinking through what reform inundergraduate science teaching might look like and how we help faculty to implement such reform.

While the great scientists of the past recognized a need for a multidisciplinary approach, today’s schools often treat math and science as subjects separate from the rest. This not only creates a disinterest among students, but also a potential learning gap once students reach college and then graduate into the workforce. In light of the expensive nature of quantitative research, such as experiments, researchers must seek other methods of understanding the world around them. As such, new qualitative methods are gaining ground in the modern research community. Enhancing Qualitative and Mixed Methods Research with Technology explores the integration of new digital tools into the research process. ...

University of Texas at Austin My friendship with Freeman Dyson goes back over a half century. My first contact with him goes back to the late 1950s, when I was at the Institute for Advanced Study, and then evolved when I was a consultant at General Atomics in La Jolla, California. Freeman was then trying to design a space ship — the Orion — which would be propelled by atomic bo...
