É estudada uma possível solução para resolver os problemas globais dos resíduos sólidos, da poluição atmosférica e da crise energética. A palha de arroz é uma biomassa abundante que é frequentemente eliminada através da queima em campo aberto. Os hidratos de carbono e os açúcares da palha de arroz podem ser hidrolisados em ácido para produzir furanos, que são os blocos de construção de um combustível conhecido como etoximetil furfural, que tem uma densidade energética semelhante à da gasolina. Foi criado um modelo para representar a concentração dos diferentes componentes presentes no reator em função do tempo de residência.
