Die Relativitätstheorie Albert Einsteins bedeutet eme Gedankenumwälzung in der physikalischen Wissenschaft. Seine Tat besteht im wesentlichen in folgendem: Es ist ihm gelungen, weit vollständiger als es bisher der Fall war, den Anteil des Beobachters und den Anteil der Außenwelt an den Dingen, die wir wahrnehmen, voneinander zu trennen. Die Wahrnehmung eines Gegenstandes ist abhängig von der Stellung des Beobachters und den Umständen, unter denen er sich befindet. Z. B. bewirkt die Entfernung, daß der Gegen­ stand kleiner und weniger hell erscheint. Dies berücksichtigen wir schon (beinahe unbewußt) bei der Erklärung unserer Wahr­ nehmungen. Nunmehr stellt sich aber heraus, daß die Berück­ sichtigung der Bewegung des Beobachters bisher nicht gen au genug gewesen ist - was man nicht bemerkt hatte, weil praktisch genommen alle Beobachter nahe die gleiche Bewegung, nämlich die der Erde, aufweisen. Es zeigt sich, daß der physikalische Raum und die physikalische Zeit in engem Zu­ sammenhang mit der Bewegung des Beobachters stehen; nur eine gestaltlose Vereinigung beider bleibt in der Außenwelt zurück. Wenn :Raum und Zeit auf -ihren eigentlichen Ur­ sprung - den Beobachter - verwiesen werden, dann bekommt die Welt der Natur ein höchst merkwürdiges Aussehen. In Wirklichkeit ist sie einfacher geworden, die den Haupterschei­ nungen zugrunde liegende Einheit tritt nunmehr klar zutage. Die Folgerungen, zu denen man auf diesem Wege geführt wird, haben sich (mit einer noch nicht ganz aufgeklärten Ausnahme), soweit sie experimentell geprüft werden konnten, bestätigt.
